KEY FAQs

  • Key Communities is one of the most diverse first-year learning communities on campus that focuses on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. You get paired with a current student mentor to support you throughout your first year.
  • As a Key student, you will take 2-3 classes with other Key students, including a Key seminar and one or two All-University Core Curriculum classes. Many of the Key seminars have a focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.
  • If you are a part of our Residential Learning Community, you have the privilege and requirement of living in Braiden Hall with all other Key students.
  • If you are a part of our General Learning Community, you can live anywhere on campus other than Braiden Hall, or off-campus with a housing exemption.
  • You should hear back from Key regarding the status of your submission within two weeks via the email you provided. If you have not heard back, please contact us through the contact information below and we will get back to you about the status of your submission.
  • If your majoring in Music, Art, Theater, or Dance we do not currently have cluster options that fit with their structured course schedules. Within these majors, students have very set program and schedule requirements, which do not allow for any additional credits.
  • ROTC, Band, and Color Guard = Students participating in any of the programs listed have the opportunity to also participate in the Key Communities, although it is not recommended due to scheduling conflicts throughout the fall and spring semesters. If you are a student who is interested in both, please contact us!
  • PLP – Yes, because PLP does not have a live-on requirement, we have had many students participate in both PLP and Key Communities in the past. What is important to note is that there are times when the content may overlap and the Key Seminar and PLP courses are considered Elective, so students may end up with many elective credits.
  • The Key Communities does not charge a program fee.
  • For CSU students, the cost of attendance calculated through the Office of Financial Aid is for a standard room. While there are many price points for the various housing options, Key Residential students are housed within Braiden Hall, which is a suite-style hall and has a mid-range price point when compared to housing options at CSU.
  • The cost of a standard room and that of a suite-style room are different. The rates for each hall can be viewed on the Housing and Dining website.
  • All of the courses taken with Key count toward graduation as elective credits or within one of the All-University Core Curriculum categories.
  • Key Communities is a year-long commitment and is a part of your first-year experience. If you wish to continue with Key after your first year, you can join Key Plus!
